Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Finishes the Asia Cross Country Rally 2014

The Asia Cross Country Rally is an annual event, which challenges vehicles through a variety of terrain, including jungle, beach, cliffs, and plantations. This year, A Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV completed the FIA-certified rally, winning first place in its class and fourth place overall.

The plug-in hybrid four-wheel drive SUV was entered into the T1E (electric vehicle) class by the Two & Four Motor Sports rally team which is supported by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation. The Asia Cross Country Rally began in Thailand on August 9th and ended in Cambodia on August 15th.

“Because the extreme road surface conditions unique to the Asia Cross Country Rally gave us a really hard time when we competed for the first time last year, this year we raised the ground clearance further to improve the car’s off-road performance,” said Mr. Yasuo Tanaka, technical director. “I am also very satisfied and proud that the Outlander PHEV was able to demonstrate so convincingly the reliability and durability of MMC’s own plug-in hybrid electric vehicle system as well as the superior capabilities of its Twin Motor 4WD and S-AWC systems. The Outlander PHEV’s improved all-terrain performance this year means we have been able to collect more valuable data than last. I am looking forward to utilizing this in our electric vehicle development.”

The race looked something like this, only more intense and in a Outlander PHEV instead of just a 2015 Outlander.

The team completed the 1,986 kilometer rally in 19 hours, 17 minutes, and 12 seconds. Based on the Outlander PHEV’s performance in the last two years, it’s proved its reliability, capability and that its electric powertrain is durable even in the harshest conditions.

After last year’s (less successful) rally, Mitsubishi learned that they needed higher ground clearance and the drive battery to be placed higher for better off-road performance. Other modifications included the installation of a roll cage and underbody skid plate, the use of a lighter hood, tailgate and interior parts, additional sealing and a snorkel for water crossings.

Here at Bakersfield Mitsubishi, we know the Outlander is a hard-working, durable machine – perfect for off-roading, road-tripping, commuting, and everything in between. Stop by today to learn more!
