A new Mitsubishi poster is teasing “The Return of a Legend” ahead of the 2015 Chicago Auto Show, which hints at the debut of a new—or rather renewed—SUV.
It’s hard not to think of the Montero when referring to “legendary” nameplates in Mitsubishi’s SUV legacy. The Montero was as rugged as utility vehicles came with its body-on-frame construction and four-wheel-drive capability, making it a popular off-roader among Americans between 1982 and 2006.
But the most likely vehicle we’ll see in Chicago is a production-ready version of the automaker’s GC-PHEV Concept, which was previously debuted at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. It was a plug-in hybrid that combined a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 with a 94-horsepower electric motor, resulting in impressive yet efficient performance.
At the time, the GC-PHEV was already a candidate for a future, redesigned Montero, so it seems like the pieces are all coming together. We’ll keep be sure to keep you updated at Bakersfield Mitsubishi!
