Recently, Mitsubishi announced that it has plans to introduce a new crossover or SUV every year until 2021. With this news, it seems Mitsubishi’s future will be solely focused on its most popular models. There is one caveat, however; this announcement was made by Mitsubishi UK, so it’s unclear how many of these models will make it to our shores.
In speaking with the UK-based CAR Magazine, Mitsubishi’s UK managing director Lance Bradley, said, “‘We will be positioned as a manufacturer of authentic, environmentally responsible 4x4s and SUVs. We have a clear strategy focused around SUVs, 4WD systems, and EV drivetrain technology. Those three things are key competences. We will launch five new models which embrace all three of those things, with a more distinctive design language.”
The smallest of the five new models will be based on the eX Concept that Mitsubishi showed off at the Tokyo Motor Show last year. If it stays true to form, this crossover will at least have a fully electric option, with possibly a gasoline version as well.
Some of the other predicted models include one based on the XR-PHEV II concept that was seen in Geneva, a brand new Outlander with a possible PHEV powertrain, an updated Shogun/Pajero/Montero that will be in the smaller “Sport” form, and a full-size replacement for the Shogun/Pajero/Montero.
The first to reach the market will likely be the crossover based on the XR-PHEV II concept and will hit the market sometime next year.
