The new Mitsubishi SUV was spotted in Australia despite its black and white camouflage paintjob. The all-new 2016 Mitsubishi Challenger is based on the Triton but resembles an Outlander as well. If all goes well, the SUV will hit dealer lots, dirt, and pavement by 2017.
The spied SUV resembles the redesigned Outlander and wields a Lexus spindle style grille. The new models looks as though the rear glass has been styled rather than squared and the taillights sit vertically along either side of the tailgate.
The Challenger puts up a high wheel arch for protection and clearance. The load lip is also lower, making it easier to load larger items into the back. We can probably expect some of the new Triton’s specs to make its way to the SUV as well.
The Triton is getting a 2.4L turbo diesel under the hood attached to either a six speed manual or five speed automatic transmission. There’s also rear and four wheel drive configurations. As an off-road SUV, we’ll hopefully see added suspension and better handling too. The real question is when will the Challenger make its debut, the Tokyo or Frankfurt Motor Show?
