Safety is always a priority, but not all of us drive as well as we should. Drivers are often easily distracted by music, cell phones, and other electronic devices, and many develop bad driving habits. That’s why we’ve put together a list of New Year’s resolutions for drivers, helping you to kick the bad habits and learn to be a safer driver. Whether you’re new to driving or you’ve been at it for years, these tips are perfect for everyone.
First and foremost, you should resolve to never drink and drive. According to Consumer Reports, nearly 10,000 people die per year in alcohol-induced accidents, making it especially dangerous. If you decide that you are going to drink, get a designated driver or call a taxi.
Next, ditch the cell phone. Your car should be distraction free. Some vehicles come with hands-free systems to help you maintain eye contact on the road; however, not every driver can multitask. If you find yourself distracted when behind the wheel, shut off your phone and put it in the glove box.
Be sure to drive the speed limit. This is one of the most commonly broken laws on the road. Although it might be tempting to simply keep up with traffic, speed limits are specially designed to keep you safe. Also, few people realize it, but speed limits are often set to maintain better fuel economy as well. By not speeding you’re not only staying safe, but you’ll also save at the pump.
Finally, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by carpooling when possible. This is one of the most difficult resolutions to keep, but it is well worth it. If you are really committed, consider switching to a hybrid or electric vehicle in order to do your part in reducing harmful emissions.
