The braking system is the most important safety system in any motor vehicle. Without it, any technology that uses automatic braking won’t be effective. That can be a major problem for modern cars, especially in heavy traffic. Fortunately there are a few easy-to-recognize signs you need new brakes that alert you to have your car serviced.
- Noise – Strange noises in a car are never good and the same goes for the braking system. Any unfamiliar sounds, like a loud screech or squeal, could indicate that your brake pads are on their final breath. Make an appointment to have your car serviced sooner rather than later!
- Feel – Like noise, strange feels, like vibrations, are never a good sign. If your car pulls to one side when braking, the brake lines could be wearing unevenly or there could be something strange in the brake fluid. Literal vibrations indicate that your rotors could be warped. Have a certified technician diagnose the problem immediately.
- Look – Another tell-tale way to check on your braking system is by literally looking at them. The brake pads are usually visible through the spokes of the wheel and should be pressed against the rotor. If the pads have less than a quarter-inch left, make a service appointment to have them replaced.
